A Community Preschool in the heart of Parkdale Village

Incursions & Excursions

We regularly invite in visitors from the wider community. This captures the children’s interest and imagination in areas such as drama, music or dance or in topics like responsible pet ownership, healthy eating puppet show, the museum’s dinosaur fossils or Australian animals.

"Our family is in its 4th year of attending Parkdale Preschool. Both kids have loved their time there, especially the tyre swing, slide and new water pump. Activities I've heard the most about from my kids have been the reptile incursion, Ricketts Point rockpool walk, and cooking & eating produce from the vegie patch. So much so that my daughter wants to be a gardener after helping Natasha and Kerry in the garden!"

Play Based Learning

We believe that Children learn best through play. Young children acquire new skills, knowledge and understandings through active engagement over time by building on their prior experience. Fun is essential!

Kitchen Garden Program

The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program is part of our preschool curriculum for all children and aims to promote positive food behaviours as children learn about how to grow, cook and eat fresh, nutritious food.

Session Times for 2021

Session times will remain the same as they have been in 2020.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age can my child commence 3 year old kindergarten?

Children are eligible for attendance in the 2021 3-year-old program provided they have turned 3 by 31st January 2021.

When do registrations open for 2021 kindergarten?

3 year old registrations are now open! They are handled directly with us and you can register via the form on our website. Applications close at 5pm Friday 15th May 2020.

4 year old registrations must be submitted via the Kingston City Council website from 1 May 2020. Go here and select "registration form", then nominate Parkdale Preschool as your first preference. Applications close June 30th, 2020.

What are the class sizes?

Our four- year-old groups have a maximum of 22 children and have 2 teachers supervising each session (11 children per teacher). Our three-year-old group has a max of 27 children, with 3 teachers (9 children per teacher).

What if my child still has toileting accidents or isn’t toilet trained?

We highly recommend that families begin the toilet training process prior to starting kindergarten. If your child is not completely toilet trained you can contact your class teacher so that a toilet training plan can be put in place. Parents and staff should be consistent in toilet training for children to feel secure and confident in their efforts. We are mindful that children at this age still have toileting mishaps occasionally. Educators will regularly remind children to use the toilet. We ask that parents pack a spare set of clothes so that we can help your child to clean up if need be.

As a parent, how involved can I be in my child's preschool experience?

Our kindergarten is a unique place for children to grow and learn and for families to be deeply involved and connected to their child’s experience. This is made possible by the commitment parents make each year to be a part of this community, including signing up to "Stay & Play" during a kinder session, assisting with extra curricular activities such as excursions, meeting other parents through organised social events, or sharing a special skill or interest with the class such as reading a story or singing songs in another language, playing a musical instrument, cooking, etc.

If parents would like to be more involved then there is also the opportunity to join the volunteer Committee of Management.

What is the difference between sessional kindergarten and childcare?

At sessional kindergarten the same group of children attend each session and children are dropped off and picked up at the same time.  This allows children to benefit from a predictable routine and form friendships that remain consistent for the year, which helps them to feel safe and secure in their environment.

Another advantage of Parkdale Preschool is that parents can be involved in the program, for example through attending ‘Stay and Play’.  There is also the opportunity to get to know other families at drop off and pick up times, form new friendships and feel involved in the kinder community.

Set drop off and pick up times don’t always work for families every day. Therefore, many children at Parkdale Preschool also attend long day care centres on other days, and gain the benefits of both, with a wide circle of friends and flexible childcare to suit parents and busy family life.

Which primary schools do most children go on to?

The main schools our children attend are Parkdale Primary School, Parktone Primary School and Mentone Primary School, as well as other local schools.

Can I visit Parkdale Preschool?

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic we are unfortunately unable to offer families the opportunity to visit Parkdale Preschool at this time. We have created a virtual tour video in an attempt to make up for this.
